There are films where suspending all belief at the door makes for a very entertaining movie; Limitless is one of those movies. Limitless is an above average movie with great cinematography, solid acting, and a very simple, yet highly entertaining concept that will surely please the common crowd.
Limitless stars Bradley Cooper as an unsuccessful writer named Eddie Morra who has let him-self go physically: bad hair, poorly dressed, and almost looks like he could pass as a homeless person. Of course, he isn’t homeless, just depressed and in need of a boost in his life.
The boost comes in the form a clear pill he is given by his ex-wife’s brother (Vernon), played by Johnny Whitworth, who he happens to bump into on the street one day. Vernon is a fast-talking hustler, and it becomes obvious he sells drugs for a living. Vernon offers Eddie one free sample of the clear pill he claims will enable him to access his entire brain, and not just the 20% he uses. With seemingly nothing to lose, Eddie takes the pill and soon finds himself ‘limitless’ as the title of the movie suggests. In just four days, Eddie completes his book, has suddenly become an expert stock market investor, and becomes a popular socialite with his sudden new found knowledge. The pill and the many more he takes along the way also inspires him to start working out, dress very well, and get a great looking hair cut. Bradley Cooper pulls off the physical transformation beautifully without any doubt. If you don’t question the ‘magic’ behind the pills, and manage to engross yourself in the fantasy of it all, the movie is very entertaining throughout.
Those who have seen the movie trailer will be wondering about Robert De Niro’s character: Carl Van Loon. Carl is a huge Wall Street business tycoon who has heard about Bradley’s incredible abilities to transform a few thousand dollars into over two million dollars in a ridiculously short amount of time. Carl arranges a meeting with Eddie, and despite his apprehension, he decides to hire him as an assistant, with the hopes of increasing his company’s fortune. Fans of Robert De Niro will surely be disappointed he isn’t in many scenes of the movie, but you must realize that this story is all about Eddie Morra and the magic pills that make his brain fly on cloud nine. Rating: B
