I have decided to buy Blu-rays priced at only $9.99 or less. Sounds very limiting doesn't it? Actually, I own dozens of great BD (Blu-ray discs) titles that I purchased for fewer than ten bucks. Movies such as: True Romance, Last Action, Hero, Shoot'Em Up, Die Hard collection ($16.99 for four movies), Training Day, Terminator 2, and many others for under $7 bucks!
Last time I checked, Blockbuster rents Blu-rays for around $6 each. I would rather own BD for a few bucks more. Of course, Blockbuster has all the new releases which you can't buy for under $10. Some Blockbuster locations allow you to trade in used BD for a store credit. Here's what I've done...
This past boxing day, I realized Future Shop and Best Buy had BD on sale for as low as $5.99 each. I picked up about six of these cheap movies, watched them once, and then took them to Blockbuster for a store credit. Blockbuster gave me between $5 and $8 for each movie I traded in. That's right; some movies gave me back a higher credit than what I originally had paid for them. The store credit was placed on a card which I could then proceed to use at any Blockbuster location.
Back to Future Shop and Best Buy. Most new BD releases tend to be priced between $19.99 and $29.99. I certainly don't want to build a collection of movies at that inflated price, knowing they will most likely be lowered in price over time. There are some movies such as Up In The Air starring George Clooney which I would love to own, but the price has been stuck at roughly $34.99 for nearly a year. This is the case of a movie which was released in much smaller quantities, so it will probably stay highly priced for quite some time. Oh well, so many other good cheap movies can still be found.
Here's what I noticed lately, some movies are priced much higher at say Best Buy over Future Shop. I recently noticed Last Action Hero priced at $28.99 over at Best Buy. Future Shop had the same movie priced at $11.99. Each store has the same price match policy, and they also guarantee a 10% price difference against the competition. I simply took a copy of Last Action Hero to the customer service desk of Best Buy, they then verified the price at Future Shop and with the 10% difference I only had to pay $8.29 before taxes. Not bad for a movie I could always flip at Blockbuster or even lend to someone else.
By the way, I would highly recommend checking out www.blu-ray.com. This is a fantastic site that grades BD on the movie itself, picture quality, audio quality, extras (bonus material), and an overall rating. The site grades BD on a scale from 0 to 5 using 0.5 increments. You can also register and give your own feedback on BD and join forums to discuss various topics.
